Citizenship Ceremonies

Where do I make initial enquiries?

Australian Citizenship applications and enquiries should be directed to the Department of Home Affairs.

To become an Australian citizen, an application must first be lodged with the Department of Home Affairs. Application forms are available on-line at All applicants will be notified by the Department of Home Affairs of the outcome. If you have an enquiry about the status of your application, please contact or by phone 131 880.

What is a Citizenship Ceremony?

The final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people, is to make the Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony. Citizenship Ceremonies are special events; they fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law and also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community.

The Department of Home Affairs will advise when your application has been processed and approved, enabling you to attend a citizenship ceremony. The Department of Home Affairs will send you an invitation to your allocated ceremony, which will be influenced by the date of approval of your application and also the amount of space available at the citizenship ceremony venue.

The ceremonies are usually presided by the Mayor. For more information about what you can expect to happen in a Citizenship Ceremony, view our online video above.

When are Citizenship Ceremonies held in the City of Mitcham?

If you have any questions about when you will be able to attend a ceremony, please contact the Department of Home Affairs via email or phone 131 880.

Can other people come along to the Citizenship Ceremony with me?

Yes, you are welcome to bring close family members with you to celebrate, generally this is capped at 2 guests per conferee due to space limitations; you will be advised of the number of people that can join you in your invitation from the Department of Home Affairs.

Can I attend a Citizenship Ceremony in another Council area instead?

If you have received approval from the Department of Home Affairs and require to attend a ceremony prior to the next upcoming date with the City of Mitcham, you can participate in a citizenship ceremony with another Council.
