The City of Mitcham is currently seeking expressions of interest from members of the public to sit on its Audit Committee (the Committee) for a three year term, commencing May 2019.

The purpose of the Committee is to assist Council in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities relating to accounting, audit, legislative compliance, financial and operational risk management, good governance and reporting practices; and ensure effective communication between the Council, Administration and External Auditor in accordance with the Local Government Act 1999 and other relevant legislation. The Committee is charged with enquiring into and making recommendations to the Council where necessary with respect of the following matters:

  • Financial Reporting and Sustainability
  • Risk Management and Internal Control
  • External Audit
  • Internal Audit and Compliance
  • Fraud and Whistleblowing
  • Policy Development
  • Other Matters

The Committee comprises of five members; three Independent Member positions and two Elected Member positions. Currently there is one Independent Member position vacant and Expressions of Interest are sought for an experienced professional across a range of disciplines including finance, risk management, corporate governance, etc. The successful candidate for the role will be compensated for their time and expertise by an appropriate level of remuneration, based on meeting attendance. The Committee meets quarterly to transact normal committee business with an additional meeting scheduled to consider Council’s Annual Financial Statements, ie five meetings per year. The Committee may also meet at the request of the Presiding Member in consultation with the committee and agreement of the Chief Executive Officer or at the request of Council.
