Traffic Management

The City of Mitcham is guided by traffic management standards to ensure the safety of our community.


Traffic volumes are based on the roads current classification and functionality of the road within the road network and are in line with current industry standards.

1. Roads under Council responsibility

All local roads – acceptable traffic volume of 1500 vehicles per day 

2. Roads under Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure responsibility

Major roads for example Belair Road, Cross Road, etc

Speed is considered to be an issue if it is 5km/hr or more above the eighty fifth percentile speed.

Definition of the eighty fifth percentile speed (AS1742.4) is: the speed at or below which eighty fifth of all vehicles are observed to travel under free flowing conditions past a nominated point.

Crash History

If there is a crash history of above three casualty crashes over a five year period, traffic management will be reviewed to improve road safety.

Commercial Vehicular Traffic

If up to 5% of vehicles per day for residential roads are commercial vehicular traffic, these roads will be analysed.

Non-Residential Traffic

If up to 15% of vehicles per day for residential roads are non-residential traffic, these roads will be analysed.

Please note: all of the above criteria are taken into consideration when analysing traffic issues before projects are prioritised as part of a City wide approach to traffic management in Mitcham.

Safety around Schools

School zones:

  • Optimum length: 80-100m
  • Located adjacent to school main entrances
  • 25km/hr applies when children are present
  • Council has an educational Public Safety – Children’s Schools and Traffic flyer that is sent to all schools on a regular basis. You can find a copy of the flyer here

Rail Maintenance Works Notification

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has introduced an electronic notification system to enable residents surrounding the rail corridors (including the tram line) to receive rail maintenance works notifications via email or SMS. This will allow residents to be notified of upcoming night works in a more timely manner, including unplanned works. 

To subscribe to receive electronic rail maintenance notifications, residents should visit and enter their contact and address details. From that time, they will receive electronic notifications of works that occur within the vicinity of the address they nominate. Written notifications will be phased out from 1 July 2017. All information will be kept confidential. Notifications will include the option to ‘opt out’ of receiving notifications at any time.
